Mikel Weisser is one of the most recognized names in Arizona cannabis legalization. With a teaching background in public education, he became well-known for his charismatic expression of outspoken views on everything from marijuana reform, incarceration, homelessness, and politics.

Meeting the Legend of Arizona Cannabis Reform

Tell us about yourself.

My name is Mikel Weisser. I am the state director of the National Organization for Marijuana Reform. NORML has been around since 1970. I first became aware of NORML spring of my senior year when Playboy magazine had published an interview with Keith Stroup, the founder of NORML.

So, Playboy introduced you to NORML.

Right, right! I was flipping through and I got the interview and I saw “legalize marijuana,” and I thought “that’ll never happen. Where are the tits, and kept flipping. Little did I know I would tell that to the founder of NORML 40 years later. I told him it wasn’t going to happen. He might as well be talking about reversing the tide.

You thought you’d never see legalization in your lifetime?

At that point I hadn’t even become a marijuana smoker. I lived in a cartel-controlled part of the United States, so for me, with no personal use of cannabis and seeing the dangerous crime that it caused I was thinking it was a ridiculous idea.

You say cartel-controlled. What do you mean by that?

In the 70’s and 80’s in America, a significant amount of marijuana that came through the United States from Mexico came through Rio Grande, Texas, the very southern part of Texas.   Continued —–>   Watch the video
